As part of the RPATS project a parent training component has been developed and pilot-tested for EI/ECSE training sites and ASD specialists. The parent training component follows a “train the trainer” model to allow programs to be able to continue the program without continued support from the project consultants. The parent training is primarily geared to teach parents ways interact with their child throughout the day using appropriate methods. The parent training uses the pivotal response training technique to guide parents to interact with their child. The goal of the training is to increase child/parent communication, improve social interaction and to improve the child’s behavior at home. The parent training uses the following process:
1. Workshop for the autism specialist and teacher about how to implement the parent training program.
2. Evening parent training group sessions over a several week period of time. The consultants will lead the first group session. The autism specialist/teacher will lead the other group sessions using the consultant material.
3. Several 1:1 parent/child coaching sessions for all parents involved in the group sessions, integrated between the evening parent training sessions.
A parent and teacher manual is provided along with video examples for use at the group parent training sessions.
RPATS is able to offer this service to one site in each region over the two year grant period for EI/ECSE programs. We will be scheduling regions to participate.
PARENT TRAINING FOR ELEMENTARY LEVEL STUDENTS
The RPATS project is in the process of developing a parent training component appropriate for the elementary level students and parents. We are developing brief "how to" packets for parents on issues they may be facing at home. The project will also provide information for teachers on how to effectively communicate with parents about their child's school program.
