1. Training Sites - A system of training sites available to train staff, provides a proactive approach to individualizing services for children with ASD. By building state and local capacity through a systematic training protocol, large numbers of staff can be more thoroughly trained in an efficient, research based replicable model. Between 2003-2007 the project started 32 training sites and piloted two middle school sites.
- Training centers will be individualized according to needs (e.g. self-contained or inclusion) of the district/region.
- Although initial training will consist of the three research-based behavioral methodologies (Discrete Trial Training, Pivotal Response Training and Teaching within Functional Routines), the intent of the model classrooms is to provide a setting to demonstrate and train staff in whatever methodologies have proven effectiveness. This means that the training centers should keep abreast of changes in technology for educating students with autism.
- Criteria for trained personnel have been determined and training sites will be considered “ready for training others” when these criteria have been met.
2. Regional ASD Specialist Training Cadre – The regional ASD specialist training cadre is a statewide network of well-trained professionals equipped to extend state provided training and follow-up to a broader audience within their region.
- These personnel are being trained as “trainers” to assist other regional and LEA staff.
- Training was provided in instructional methods for teaching children with autism concurrent with the training provided during the establishment of each site.
- The ASD cadre training will consist of attendance at the project workshops, program set-up sessions and the hands-on supervised instruction during development of a regional training site.
- After training the regional ASD specialists are able to train others at the RPATS training sites.
