The following training options are available through your Regional Program as part of the RPATS project:

Available Now:

1.  Regional workshops on discrete trial training, pivotal response training and functional routines for your staff can be arranged as part of the RPATS project. Some workshops will be offered by Portland State University as part of the continuing development of new RPATS sites and other workshops will need to be offered by the Regional Program to meet individual LEA needs. It is suggested that staff attend these trainings prior to the hands-on or on-site training described below. Contact your Regional Autism Coordinator to arrange for this training opportunity.

2. Hands-on training for teachers, instructional assistants, autism specialists and other related service staff at the RPATS training sites in:

· Discrete trial training

· Pivotal response training

· Teaching functional routines

· Visual schedule systems

· Individualized communication systems

· Positive behavioral support planning

3. On-site support can be provided (at your site_ by an autism specialist, following the hands-on training sessions. The -on-site support will assist the program to develop individualized programs for each student and to implement the instructional methods described above.

Training Process and Release Time Funding:

The Regional Program Autism Coordinator can outline the training process for the specific training options in which LEAs and EI/ECSE Programs are interested. In general the RPATS training process involves the following three components:

1.      Group Workshop to relay the foundational information needed to implement the techniques;

2.      Hands-on training provided at the RPATS site;

3.      On-site (at your site consultation provided to assist with the program set-up and staff training.

The Oregon Department of Education has made a small amount of funds available through the Regional Programs to reimburse participating agencies for staff substitute pay. These funds are to provide release time to LEA staff to be involved in RPATS training. Please discuss the need for these funds with your Regional Coordinator.
